Brown Black Students United (formerly Organization of United African People)

The Black Student Union aims to offer the community opportunities for both cultural enrichment and intellectual growth through educational, social, and political programming. BSU hopes to develop and maintain an expansive network and platform that not only empowers our community but also promotes solidarity within and beyond the gates of Brown University. The Black Student Union, originally known as the Organization of United African People (OUAP), was formed in 1967. OUAP was an umbrella organization of Black students on campus, serving as a focal point for Black cultural, political, and social activities. Through student input, OUAP worked to foster cooperation and unity within the Black community at Brown.

Harambee House

Harambee House was founded in 1993 by a group of African-American students at Brown University.  Harambee House is a living center for all those interested in the politics, history, society, and other aspects of African and African-American culture. Harambee, meaning “Togetherness” in Swahili, is also focused on cultivating a sense of community, academic excellence, and leadership for all people of African descent. The House is a celebration of the people and the culture of the African Diaspora. It imbues students with a sense of cultural pride that they can take with them in their various co-curricular pursuits at Brown.
